Who is responsible

Tobias Kahler, privacy@noctvrn.com

In short

There is no account. The app carries no tracking, advertising or analytics code. What the app knows about you stays on your iPhone and your Watch, unless you share it with your team, and then it goes to your team's members only, encrypted end to end.

Stays on your device

  • Your position, waypoints, routes, tracks, timers, saved map regions and settings.
  • Night Log: the night sessions your Watch saves as workouts in Apple Health. NOCTVRN reads them on your iPhone and sends them nowhere.
  • Barometer and compass readings.
  • Device backups made by Apple (iCloud or computer) include your waypoints, routes, track and settings, so a new iPhone gets them back. Caches and the team's state are kept out of backups.

What leaves it, and to whom

  • Map and terrain data come from our server data.noctvrn.com in Germany. It sees which map pieces are loaded, not who loads them. Its log keeps the shortened IP address (the last part removed), the time, the file asked for and the app version, for up to 7 days, to keep the service running and to stop abuse. Once a day the app also asks this server for the next drop of noctvrn.supply; nothing about you goes with it.
  • Your team: positions, status, points, routes, reports, messages and voice go only to the members of your team, encrypted end to end with a key that comes from the team code. Near each other the devices link directly over Wi-Fi. Over the internet the encrypted data passes our relay relay.noctvrn.com in Germany, which cannot read it. The relay knows a session ID derived from the team code, a hashed member token, the IP address of a connection while it is open (for limits against abuse) and how much data passes. It keeps no access log; a session ends 10 minutes after its last member left.
  • Genuine app check: when a team starts on the relay, Apple's App Attest confirms that the request comes from the real app. The relay keeps the attested key for that check, nothing that names you.
  • Weather: your position, rounded to about a kilometre, goes to Apple WeatherKit.
  • Map search: what you type into the place search goes to Apple Maps, with the area of the map you look at.
  • Purchases run through the App Store; NOCTVRN learns only what was bought.
  • Watch: iPhone and Watch exchange the app's state over Apple's WatchConnectivity.
  • Report a problem (SETUP) opens an e-mail in your own mail app, with the app version, the iOS version, the device model, the language and the display mode under your text. You see all of it and decide whether to send it; the app sends nothing itself.
  • TAK server (only if you add one): your callsign, team colour, TAK role, position with accuracy, course, speed, battery, device, iOS and app version, your chat, your alerts if you allow it, and what you share there go to that server, over an encrypted connection with your own certificate. Whoever runs the server can keep and pass this on; NOCTVRN does not get it. Before the first connection the app asks once.
  • Our TAK test server tak-test.noctvrn.com in Germany is for beta testers only, and here NOCTVRN is responsible: it gets the TAK data above. It does not archive events; it keeps the last position of each device for those who connect and chat for those away, server logs for 14 days, accounts and certificates until the end of the beta. To send you the access we keep your e-mail address with your user name, also until the end of the beta, on our own server in Germany; the access comes in one mail from beta@noctvrn.com. Ask us and we delete yours at once.
  • TestFlight: in a beta, Apple collects crash reports and the feedback you send, under Apple's TestFlight terms, and passes them to us.

Permissions

  • Location: moon, sun and twilight where you are; in an active team your position goes to its members, then also in the background (blue indicator).
  • Microphone: only while the talk key is held or the line is open.
  • Local network: devices of a team near each other link directly.
  • Motion: the barometer, for a steadier altitude.
  • Health: the Night Log reads the night sessions of your Watch.
  • Camera: only to read the QR code of a TAK server; nothing is recorded.
  • Notifications: alerts and direct messages from a TAK server, asked when you connect one.
  • Each is asked where it is needed, location once at the first start.

Legal basis

Providing the functions you use: Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR. Running our servers safely, including the short logs: Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in a working and secure service.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and to object, and the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. As NOCTVRN does not know who you are, there is usually nothing about you on our servers; write to the address above all the same.

Changes

This page shows the current state. When the app or its servers handle data differently, it changes with them.

Verantwortlich

Tobias Kahler, privacy@noctvrn.com

Kurz gesagt
